defiant restriction in the wake of the newtown, connecticut, shootings. instead, the nra is calling forearmed security guards at every school, every school in the country. cnn's tom foreman is joining us now. you were at that speech that wayne lap ichlt erre gave announcing the reaction of what happened a week ago today. tell our viewers how it went. >> well, as you know, they kept a very low profile but today they came out to say they had some things to say and they sure did. despite protesters, the president and public opinion increasingly pushing against the gun lobby, the national rifle association sent a sharp message to wayne la pierre. no retreat. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. >> in a wide-ranging statement, lapierre condemned the shootings in connecticut and other places but accused congress of relying on armed guards in congress while calling other actions inappropriate elsewhere. >

:30. in newtown, connecticut, was there a moment of silence. the ringing of the bells. [ bells ] >> church bells rang out in honor of those killed a week ago when a gunman burst into sandy hook elementary school. 20 children and six adults died at the school. the gunman also killed his mother and himself. governors in at least 29 states called for a moment of silence in honor of the victims. now the white house says president obama took part privately. also in newtown today, three more victims of the massacre are being laid to rest. yesterday funerals were held for three 6-year-olds and two teachers. it is a heartbreaking scene that has played out over and over again this week. the mother of the gunman adam lanza has also been laid to rest. a friend says nancy lanza was buried yesterday at an undisclosed location. >>> the gun control debate intensifying one week after that horror in newtown, connecticut, the killing of innocent children. just moments ago we heard from the national rifle association, executive director wayne lapierre called for putting armed police in every school. he also blamed

know from the congressman from connecticut, mr. huelskamp who was apparently speaking for the far right as he spoke during the day today, he's saying this is definitely a spending problem. well if you say it's only a spending problem, or if you say it's only a revenue problem, you are not contributing to the solution. it's both a spending and a revenue problem. and the fact of the matter is the major part as we move towards 2020, the major portion of the debt of this country is going to be 40 to 45% based upon the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. that does not make any sense. we'll have no growth if we go over the cliff january 1st, people not only in the middle class but all people are going see the differences and what their plan b yesterday was a disaster because it took from kids, it took from seniors, it took from the very programs that we need day in and day out and said this is why we'll give the upper income between 450, 400,000 as the president recommended to a million dollars they will get this tax cut on the backs of those people. and i'm not going to vote for that. i'll tell you h
